Who this is for
People who have seen a vlogger pay less for a same-day MRI in China than a US co-pay and want the number checked. The video in our library documents a self-pay MRI at a Kunming private international hospital — deliberately not the public system most videos show. Here it sits next to the US average and the two UK paths (NHS referral or private self-pay), each with a source.
Read the numbers carefully
- The China figure is a self-reported single anecdote at one private hospital, corroborated by press reposts of the bill; public-hospital prices and other cities can differ, sometimes by a lot.
- The US figure is a 2018 average across large-employer claims and among the services in that dataset that grew slower than general inflation — but averages hide a wide spread, and cash and negotiated rates vary far more than the metro range shown.
- The UK rows are two different systems: free when a clinician judges the scan necessary, or self-pay at private rates when you want it sooner. Comparing the Chinese self-pay price only against the second UK row is the fair comparison.
