Overview
Renji Hospital (仁济医院), formally Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is the first hospital to practise Western medicine in Shanghai — founded in 1844 by the British missionary physician William Lockhart, which makes it one of the oldest Western-medicine institutions in China. Today it is a tertiary comprehensive hospital rated Grade III-A (三甲), China’s top classification, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and run across four campuses, with its main Pudong site at 160 Pujian Road. Its gastroenterology department is among the nationally recognised leaders in that field, and the hospital is integrated with the Shanghai Cancer Institute.
For foreign patients, the relevant detail is that Renji runs a dedicated International Medical Services division with English-language support, and it established what it describes as Shanghai’s public hospitals’ first international family medicine clinic in 2015.
